Thank you, this is very inspiring. I feel moved to share my recent experience with Zen. I felt couldn't face my self, I have avoided dealing with difficult emotions for most of my life, and thought that my problems were too enormous, and the only option was to just keep on avoiding them. Zen is giving me another way through. I thought of the one hand clapping, thats what I need to be, a kind of causeless still sound that just is. I realised that I had been seeing so much of reality as a problem since I was very young. The moon in my case cast dark and thick shadows of hopelessness. The sound of one hand clapping is making me see everything just 'is' and there is nothing actually wrong with me. I'm not a problem. But I realise that actually living this way in full awareness of my "problems" may be overwhelming at times, is the answer just to keep coming back to stillness? Do you have any other advice? Thank you so much. for helping to keep this teaching alive and available.

Just watching and up to the start of the story of reading the prajnaparimitta. My gut sense is the 7th god is the 7th chakra. The dragon the kundalini as you’ve already mentioned. But also, the point of heavy “rain” is important, and I believe he’s talking about what is known within Pali commentaries as “showering Pita”. I have met this exact same experience some years ago. After a few hours of very subtle anapanasati, the breath was so imperceptible that I moved attention to something more apparent, using a cue from Leigh Brasington to “turn the attention to a pleasant sensation”. I focused on the throbbing sensation between my eyebrows which had become very strong. My experience then was similar to an analogy of throwing a large stone into a pond, whereby I felt a huge “drop” inside and then a massive splash upwards. And then it felt like a shower had been turned on and was washing my arms and body with electrical water. It was very intense, and was accompanied by a shift in concentration, almost like I’d gone into something or another level. That experience subsided within a few moments (minute?) and all that was left afterwards was a very pleasant serene pure feeling. I know that was jhana of some level, though I’m not sure what. However, that was the only real experience of that, and I spent years attached to it trying to recreate it. Foolish actually, but quite common! Further, for years afterwards I experienced issues with my nervous system, depression, anxiety, energy…. I was meditating to hard without the necessary preliminaries (Qigong/yoga/prostrations whatever). This caused great disruption in my well-being. It was only two years ago, during an incredibly trying , that I realized directly that awareness isn’t panicked. I since notice that awareness is always there, pure and unblemished, even DURING the difficult appearances. Everything is within it. That’s been a huge discovery. It’s also made me realize too, that concentration practices, jhana/kundalini experiences etc, they’re all somewhat irrelevant, at least in the degree that, they all appear within awareness. This is a really crucial point. Those concentration states are unreliable, and most certainly not possible during turbulent times. But awareness is refuge.

Found your video after practicing Zen with a teacher for a year as a layperson. There’s been ups and downs but recently I’ve been feeling doubt about everything-job, relationships, my practice, “myself”, and so on. You’re not kidding when you say it’s uncomfortable… it feels like old terror from when I was a toddler and felt totally alone in the world. Existential loneliness. Today I sat with it and brought my curiosity. It’s never what we think it’s going to be.

Dear Daizan Skinner, What a wonderful video. You made several comments I found very helpful. When I have read about the tanden, somehow I had the impression it was on the front lower abdomen (on the surface), whereas it's better thought of as within - truly, the centre. How you explained how to combine the centredness of the tanden and boundlessness was also most helpful (& clear). Sometimes simple insights can make a big difference. My sense is that I got at least two such helpful insights from this one, short, video. Thank you. Gassho!

I liked the take of my old teacher, the wonderful maverick Nishijima Roshi. He said that Buddhism wasn't a religion but a sort of direct and practical humanist philosophy. He saw potential for Buddhism going this direction in its new encounter with the west. I think when people examine their own humanity and find no spirit, no god, nor any dazzling Buddha for that matter, but just our own remarkable ineffable existence, we will no longer need religion nor spirituality, and will grow up somewhat as a species. Best Regards, Harry

Maybe the transfer of merit is a conscious acknowledgement of individual practice within the context of Shunyata. The apparent benefit felt by the individual practitioner is simultaneously a benefit freely extended to all.
